Design & Technology

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like.  Design is how it works.” (Steve Jobs)

In KS1 the curriculum for Design and technology aims to ensure that all our pupils

  • Begin to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality products.
  • Review, evaluate and test their ideas and products.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Design and Technology is an important part of the curriculum as it lets children use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts across the curriculum. It develops many important skills from across the curriculum (such as maths, art, science and computing), and can bring learning to life as it is such a practical subject. We appreciate the whole process of designing, making and evaluating their products, not just an end product, as it allows children to make informed choices and take risks as they develop their ideas.
